Signs Your Water Heater Needs Repair or Replacement

    March 12, 2026 5 min read

Your water heater works hard — especially during Connecticut's cold winters. Most tank water heaters last 8-12 years, but many homeowners don't realize theirs is failing until they're stuck with a cold shower or a flooded basement.

7 Warning Signs Your Water Heater Is Failing

    1. Age Over 10 Years

Check the serial number on the manufacturer's label. If your water heater is over 10 years old, start planning for a replacement even if it seems to be working fine.

    2. Rusty or Discolored Hot Water

Brown or rust-colored hot water (but clear cold water) typically means the interior of the tank is corroding. Once corrosion starts, a leak isn't far behind.

    3. Rumbling or Popping Sounds

Sediment builds up at the bottom of the tank over time and hardens. When the burner heats the water, it causes rumbling and banging. This reduces efficiency and accelerates wear.

    4. Leaking Around the Base

Any pooling water around the base of your water heater is a serious issue. Small leaks will become big leaks — and a full tank failure can release 40-80 gallons of water into your home.

    5. Inconsistent Water Temperature

If your hot water fluctuates between scalding and lukewarm, the thermostat or heating element may be failing.

    6. Reduced Hot Water Supply

Running out of hot water faster than usual often means sediment has reduced the effective capacity of your tank, or a heating element is partially failed.

    7. Higher Energy Bills

A failing water heater works harder and uses more energy. If your gas or electric bill has crept up without other explanation, your water heater may be the culprit.

Repair vs. Replace: How to Decide

    Repair makes sense when:

    • The unit is less than 8 years old
    • The issue is a thermostat, element, or valve (relatively inexpensive parts)
    • There's no visible corrosion or tank damage

Replacement is the better investment when:

    • The unit is over 10 years old
    • The tank itself is leaking
    • Repair costs exceed 50% of a new unit
    • You want to upgrade to a tankless or high-efficiency model
